California's race for governor came down to Election Day on Tuesday, Nov. 3. Both campaigns spent the final hours rallying supporters before the polls closed at 8 p.m.

Becerra

Democrat Xavier Becerra and his wife, Dr. Carolina Reyes, voted Tuesday morning at the Belle Cooledge Community Center in Sacramento, CALÓ News reported. At a press gaggle afterward, Becerra, 68, said whether he would move into the Governor's Mansion or stay in his Sacramento home is a "Nov. 4 decision."

His campaign scheduled its election-night watch party in Sacramento, where Becerra was born, raised and still lives. The campaign told CALÓ News he wasn't expected to appear there until the polls closed or the race was called. On Election Eve, Becerra spoke virtually to nearly 170 volunteers at the campaign's 25th and final volunteer briefing, ABC30 reported. "Whether you're going to the polls or turning in your mail-in ballot, California needs you to make your voices heard," he said.

Becerra was the U.S. secretary of health and human services under President Joe Biden and is a former California attorney general. He went into Election Day with a big lead in the most recent Public Policy Institute of California poll. On Tuesday, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum praised his candidacy during her daily press conference, CALÓ News reported. California has had one Latino governor, Romualdo Pacheco, who was appointed in 1875. Becerra would be the first elected.

Hilton

Republican Steve Hilton made his final pitch to Central Valley voters last week with a rally at Fresno's Woodward Park. There he promoted his $3-per-gallon gas plan and called for suspending "the hidden gas tax, like the low carbon fuel standard and the cap and invest programs," according to ABC30. Hilton's supporters planned to watch returns Tuesday night at the Hyatt Regency in Garden Grove.
