Three people found dead Sunday evening inside a home on Strawberry Circle in unincorporated Strawberry, near Mill Valley, have been identified as a family of San Francisco Police Department veterans and their daughter, according to the San Francisco Police Officers Association and the Marin County Sheriff's Office.

Who died

SFPOA President Louis Wong named the three as retired Deputy Chief Ann Mannix, 65; her daughter Katie Mannix, 24; and retired Sgt. Kevin Mannix, 68. KTVU reported that the Marin County Sheriff later confirmed those identities. NBC Bay Area identified the daughter as Katherine Elizabeth Mannix and Ann with her full name, Ann Elizabeth Corriea Mannix.

Wong called Ann Mannix a "trailblazer," saying she was the first woman to join and lead the department's SWAT team and later led both the Field Operations and Special Operations bureaus. She retired in 2021. Kevin Mannix spent 27 years with the department, much of it at Taraval Station, and retired as a sergeant in 2018, according to the union and past department notices.

How it unfolded Sunday

The Marin County Sheriff's Office said a 911 caller reported shots fired inside the Strawberry Circle home just after 5 p.m. Sunday. The caller was inside and got out safely. KQED, citing dispatch logs, reported the caller identified herself as the shooter's daughter, said she had locked herself in her bedroom and heard six to nine gunshots, and escaped through a window when deputies arrived. Marin's local paper The Ark said it independently confirmed the couple's other daughter made the call. KQED reported at least four family members lived in the house. Deputies set a perimeter, entered, and found three people dead. Spokesperson Miguel Almaguer said there was no indication of an ongoing threat to the neighborhood. KTVU reported authorities confirmed there had been no previous calls for service at the address.

Murder-suicide description

Wong described the deaths as a murder-suicide in a Monday statement. "There are no words that can fully capture the depth of this tragedy, nor are there simple answers to the painful questions we are all asking," he wrote. "To see their lives… end in such a horrific and senseless manner is a burden that weighs heavily on every officer, active and retired."

Update, Monday evening: The sheriff's office has now named Kevin Mannix as the suspected shooter. CBS News Bay Area reported that the preliminary investigation indicates a double murder-suicide, with Kevin Mannix, 68, the suspected shooter. KQED reported the sheriff's office said he shot and killed his estranged wife, Ann, and their daughter Katherine. The Los Angeles Times also reported that authorities believe it was a double murder-suicide. Earlier Monday, a source had told KTVU that Kevin was the shooter.

Sheriff's spokesperson Miguel Almaguer said investigators are still working out "the sequencing of the events of the shooting inside the home." The sheriff's office said autopsies on all three are scheduled for Tuesday, CBS News Bay Area and KQED reported. No motive has been released. On Sunday night, investigators were waiting on a search warrant before doing fuller work inside the home.

In a statement reported by KTVU and CBS News Bay Area, San Francisco Police Chief Derrick Lew said Ann Mannix "served with honor and distinction at the SFPD for over 30 years." Lew said he has been in touch with Marin County Sheriff Scardina as the sheriff's office continues its investigation, CBS News Bay Area reported.

Property records cited by ABC7 show the home belongs to the two retired officers. Strawberry sits between Mill Valley and Tiburon, just off Tiburon Boulevard.
